Hello
A rotating selection of work is currently on display at Advocate Art, Wimbledon Village, London. Further work can be seen at forthcoming exhibitions.
A full time artist based in North Herts, I use my subject as a vehicle to explore colour and compositional relationships. My works therefore can appear to verge on abstraction - however, inspiration is drawn from manmade and natural landscapes. I take inspiration from far reaching sources, such as the coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset or travels to the South Island of New Zealand, France and Thailand. Despite the variety of locations my paintings all have a common theme of open space and changing light.
It is the contrast between the transient moods created by various conditions - time of day, weather etc. - and the permanence of paint, which interests me. Working in oil or acrylic, I use my paintings to explore the quality of the paint itself. I am more concerned with which material will enable me to explore my idea fully, rather than committing myself to a single media. Whichever the approach I have taken my aim is the same - to translate the feeling and memory of a place. I strive for a painting which creates an atmostphere and mood that viewers can relate to universally.
